The aim of course is to get staff working better together, to feel confident in themselves and in a group and to better the communication between them. Also it’s not about being right or wrong. As I have said to our crowd “There is no wrong answer”. How can there be its about looking into personalities.
In our working day we are always faced with new challenges whether it is a support issue on some software or working up a web marketing plan. We seem to adapt well, no, even better than well, its something we are really quite good at. However it’s when we are working in a wider team involving third parties that the projects can occasionally take longer or that we have to repeat meetings to remind ourselves of what was agreed. This can happen when we are really busy. Big projects always involve a lot of people and for us to make these projects more profitable we have to manage them efficiently with good communication.
I have done Belbin, Myres Briggs, Maslow seemingly enough personal profiling that I was not really inspired to do another but when a good friend recommended Corporate Music Development that caught my imagination. This was somehow different.
We weren’t told what it entailed just to arrive at a Hotel room! As we walked in we saw what was in store, There were rhythm guitars, a bass Guitar, a full drum set, keyboards and a two microphones. Then came the rules:
As a team of eight you have 25 mins. to lean a song – five Choices on the board – and then perform it as a group. Decide who is going to play what instrument and GO!
We were off – first it was about leadership, who was going to be a natural leader, how were the instruments allocated or chosen and how proficient did we read the instructions, get help and communicate with others.
The noise we made would not have inspired Simon Cowell to reach for a pen to sign us up but I was very proud of us all. We faired pretty well. We had another go but on different instruments and then after a break gave “Knocking on heaven’s door” a good seeing to!
Next up was the debrief: A good insight as to how we managed the task. Natural leaders were observed who had a balance of drive, organisation skills yet keeping a democratic air to the proceedings. Others we happy to stand back but were equally committed when it came to the learning and the participation. Some personalities started to come though it was said as confidence gained as the task unfolded.
Corporate Music Development made some great observations and we learn't some really good lessens that we can take away and use at work. But without doubt we all had some fun and had an experience. That in itself was worth the time.
The other big surprise for the day was that CNN World News were filming all the way through the sessions:
